My Horrible Experience with DishTv's Dish Flix Service

Dish Flix Review, A Real Life Experience You Can Learn From

I have just unsubscribed to the horrible service of DishFlix by DishTV because it only brought problems and no entertainment. If you are also thinking about subscribing to this service, then you must re-consider.

Why I subscribed to Dish Flix Service?

DishFlix is a push VOD service where movies are downloaded to a 930 GB (approx.) hard disk attached to dishtv set top box. The user can watch, pause, forward and stop these movies anytime and that too without any commercial breaks. The movies remain on hard disk for a month or so and then gets replaced with fresh movies.

Sound Good ? Yes it does... I always wanted to watch movies without commercial breaks and with ability to fast forward the songs and other unwanted stuff. So I went for this service.

How much does it cost?

Dish Flix service (Flix Studio) comes at the cost of Rs.100 per month. But initially, you need to purchase dishflix hardware that costs around Rs 5999. Once active, you get 14 to 15 new movies every month. (see my experience below for details)

How good or should I say how bad is the content?

The movies that you get preloaded in the dishflix hardware are good. It has good mix of Hindi and English movies across genres like comedy, thriller, romantic, drama, action, etc. But the selection of movies that you get each month is really poor. Some of the movies that they push are really unknown and flop movies.

Further, they only promise 14-16 movies in all languages combined. So, sometimes most of the movies received in a month are in English and sometimes most of them are in Hindi. So, its a problem unless you love watching both Hollywood and Bollywood movies.

The movies you get are no different from what you typically find playing on Zee Cinema or Zee Studio. If you mostly watch movies in one language, then most of the months, you will not find more than 2 or 3 movies interesting enough to watch. Of course this can differ from person to person.

My Horrible Experience with Dish Flix

Before subscribing to DishFlix, I called DishTV Customer Care several times to check the costs involved, the services I will get, etc etc. And later I decided to go for it.

The technician came the very next day (04, November 2015) and installed dishflix and everything worked quite well. I and my family liked the movies and watched 5 or more movies every week. New movies were also getting downloaded, some were good and some were average but we were happy with the service overall.

But in December, I realized that I was not getting 15 new movies every month. And most of the movies (Around 5 to 6) that were getting downloaded were in English, which I can not watch with my family because they don't like English movies.

So I raised a complaint in December 2015 and DishTV Support sent a technician to visit me at home. He checked signals, updated set top box software and left. But the problem continued. I raised the complaint again, and this time the technician said that there was something wrong with the dishflix hardware (hard disk) and it needs to be replaced but he does not have the replacement disk. I was informed that Jammu Service Center has raised a demand for a new replacement disk. But the disk never arrived. And again the problem remained unresolved.

This time I escalated the complaint to top level and then the technician came again and replaced the harddisk in Feb 2016. But this did not help, I tested service entire month of February and still only 3 or 4 movies got downloaded and all of them were in English.

So, I raised a complaint again and also informed the Nodal Officer for Jammu Ms Mona. This time Mr. Rohit Vermula, then service incharge of Dish Tv for Jammu region called up and sent a technician who finally diagnosed the real problem after 3+ months...

The problem was that I had a SD Set Top box and in order to be able to view all the 14-15 movies that come with dish flix service one must have a HD Set Top Box. Otherwise the subscribers will only be able to watch the SD content that (if any) gets pushed.

So, because I was a SD Customer and had a SD set top box, I could not watch all the movies for 3+ months and it caused confusion, frustration and inconvenience to everyone..

I was asked to upgrade to HD Set Top box. I reluctantly agreed to upgrade because there was no other option. I paid Rs 700 to upgrade to HD Set Top Box. The installation was done the next day and every thing started working well again and now I was able to view all SD and HD content in Both Hindi And English Language. But I noticed that the new content in English was much more than the content in Hindi. But still, at least it was working finally!

But wait, during night I noticed that when I switched from one HD channel to another I was getting a "no signal" message for a few seconds and also sometimes the screen was getting scrambled. So, I called the Dish TV customer care once again and raised a complaint.

As usual the dishtv technician visited the next day and this time he said that the cable wire was too long and needs to be replaced. I agreed to get the wire changed and he adjusted dish to fix the problem. The problem was fixed by 80% but I still continue to get no signal sometimes.  This remains unresolved till date.

However, the real shocker was when I noticed next morning that the movies in dishflix hard drive had all been erased. And there was no movie left and no movie was getting downloaded. So I raised a complaint again on 28 March 2016 (Request ID 263272373).

Mr Rohit Vermula (Service manager Jammu) called me up on phone and also service centre guy and all started blaming me that I have formatted the dishflix hardware. I denied that acquisition because I knew that I or my wife has not done it.

I called Nodal officer Ms Mona and she made me to talk me to some one else who provided no resolution. I called her the next day again and could hear her asking some one else on what to do! Then she assured me that the next day the concerned guy will call me on phone. But nobody called me.

This time no one visited my home. Nodal officer did not return the call.

In the mean time I was still paying Rs 100 per month for no service..  I could not enjoy this service in full even for 1 month and paid for 5 months subscription and hardware charges and also had to upgrade to HD.. And now nobody was listening...

Well, so I decided to unsubscribe to the service so that I don't continue to pay for the dishflix service that was never provided in full.

But to my surprise, the customer care did not stop dish flix service because there was a lockin period of 6 months. So, I'll have to pay them Rs 100 for April as well before I can unsubscribe in 04, May 2016. I have submitted a request in advance to unsubscribe me in May so I get rid of this stupid service..

I know the service centre in Jammu, the technician, the service manager, the nodal officer are all pissed off with me and think of me as a fussy customer but who's fault was it?

  1. Was it my fault that the DishTv Support or the DishTv Technician did not tell me that I need to be a HD customer if I want to enjoy DishFlix? Wasn't it their duty to tell me before installing DishFlix?
  2. Was it my fault that it took 3+ months and several complaints before the DishTv Technicians and Support diagnosed that I was not getting movies because I was a SD Customer and had a SD Set Top Box?
  3. Was it my mistake that as soon as HD Set Top Box was installed, the movies in DishFlix Hard Drive got erased?
And if it is really so easy to erase the movies from dishflix and format it while connected to set top box then it is not safe for anyone to go for this service because you can lose your money any time by accident or even the kids at home can format your dishflix hardware!

Basically I lost Rs 6000 on dishflix hardware and Rs 600 on 6month subscription fee plus another Rs 200 in calling customer care and nodal officer. And in return, I saw around 30-35 movies (most of them preloaded) and I am left with a 930GB hard disk which I never needed. Further, I had to spend Rs 700 on HD set top box and Rs 200 to replace cable wire, all to get dishflix work which never worked and in the end I had to stop the service.

So, its a Rs 7900 worth bad experience plus waste of invaluable time and peace of mind. I hope this post can save some of the people from going through all this and save their money and peace of mind.
